Sologami or Self-marriage is common in western countries, But it is not very well known in the Indian subcontinent. A young woman from India has taken the initiative to break that trend. She is going to get married herself on June 11 in accordance with Hindu tradition. The 24-year-old Keshama Bindu claims that this is going to be the first case of self-marriage in India.
The young woman from Vadodara, Gujarat, said that she wanted to break the tradition of marriage and inspire people to 'find true love'.
"At some point in my life, I realize I don't need a prince," Bindu told. Because, I am my own queen. I want the wedding day, but not the next day. So I decided to get married on June 11. On that day I will dress up as a bride, take part in ceremonies, friends will attend my wedding and then I will return to my home without going with the groom.
The Indian woman said that her mother had consented to the marriage of the "bridegroom". Bindu said, I have appointed a priest for the wedding ceremony. I have noticed that self-marriage is not as popular in India as in the West. So, I decided to start this trend and inspire others.
People may not like my thoughts. But I am confident that I am doing the right thing. Asked if she was doing this for easy campaigning, the young woman said she was already quite popular on social media as an influencer.
In a nutshell, I just want to break down Tradition and inspire others to love themselves. Many people are tired of finding love or getting divorced more than once. Being a bisexual, I fell in love with a man and a woman before. But now I want to give myself all the love. The young woman claims that her marriage is going to be the first incident of self-marriage in India.
However, legal experts said it would not be valid under Indian law.
"Under Indian law, you cannot marry yourself," said Krishnakant Bhakaria, a senior advocate in the Indian High Court. A marriage must have two. Sologami is not valid here.
Another veteran lawyer, Chandrakant Gupta, said the term "any one of the spouses" was used in the Hindu Marriage Act, which meant that there must be two people to get married.
