The interim prime minister of Israel is Yair Lapid. Only a year later, he took over from Prime Minister Naftali Bennett. Naftali Bennett handed over responsibility to Lapid on Thursday (June 30th) under an existing agreement.
After a 92-0 vote to dissolve parliament and the resignation of Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, Israel is heading for new elections for the fifth time in three years. Until the November 1 election, Bennett's old coalition partner, Yair Lapid, will be prime minister.
Earlier, leaders of Israel's ruling coalition called for the dissolution of parliament. After all, efforts to stabilize the alliance failed, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Foreign Minister Jared Lapid decided to introduce a bill next week to dissolve parliament, the two leading coalition partners said in a statement.
They added that Lapid would be the caretaker Prime Minister, not Naftali Bennett. Because under the terms of the alliance, Bennett will be prime minister for half of the full term of the government and Lapid for half the term.
The ideologically divided eight-party coalition was formed a year ago and included religious nationalists, such as Bennett, Lapid's moderate Yes Atid Party, the Left, and for the first time in Israel's history, Arab lawmakers.
Yiar Lapid, 56, is a former television presenter. Lapid is set to face a tough challenge with former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Because Netanyahu is optimistic about returning to power in the future.
